Piazza 99

After being the first to review Savoir on the web it would seem your reviewer is now the first to review Piazza 99. This Café at 99 Gawler Place recently shrugged off its identity as a Bean Bar, changing its décor a little but serving similar fare. This is a minor example of Café Foyerism with sliding glass partitions separating it from the foyer of the StateWide Superannuation building.

Previously your reviewer sampled the standard hot chocolate at the Hindmarsh Square Bean Bar. The regular hot chocolate at Piazza 99 cost four dollars and was served in the same type of glass as the Hindmarsh Square Bean Bar. The hot chocolate was presented with a brown and white froth but included no semicircle of chocolate powder which was delivered at Hindmarsh Square. In both venues the hot chocolate had a dark chocolate flavour but was not sufficiently rich or creamy.

  1. Piazza 99 is terrible, when it was a Bean Bar it was half decent, but now it is always a mess and the food they offer tastes like it has been on the shelf for a few days.

I have noticed that since they are no longer a Bean Bar they are not as busy, I guess that explains why food is left there for multiple days.

  4. I know the owners of Piazza 99 had a recent legal battle with Bean Bar (and won might I add) - so this makes me wonder whether such a ridiculous comment as posted above came under false pretences rather than being genuine. I guess that is just my suspicion and personal feeling for the following reasons. I have been a tenant of Statewide House for 8 years and can honestly say that 30 or so of my staff from 2 floors of the building and I have always been Bean Bar (now Piazza 99) addicts.

In my honest and unbiased opinion – the business was always managed very well in comparison with other Bean Bars and other coffee bars generally, and since breaking away from the franchise and therefore giving more freedom, the owners have significantly improved the business in terms of their coffee and food. The owners went to huge lengths to get the flavour right of the beans they now use (clearly they cannot use Bean Bar Beans anymore) in order to make sure that their customers are very happy - like me, and I am.

Their staff always have been outstanding, polite, attentive and friendly and still are. I just searched for Piazza 99 on Google to call them and found the top search result was the first post of this forum - a childish, untrue, scathing comment.

I am too busy to write stuff like this in forums – but on this occasion have made an exception because Piazza 99 is brilliant – and if I had all of the other franchised and sole operator coffee bars to choose from on the ground floor of my building – I, and everyone I know in this general area, would still chose Piazza 99......100 % of the time. Keep up the great work - and see you at 8:30am for my daily fix!

PS - Jenny Fritz - your name sounds made up - and for the record I see them making all of their food fresh daily.

  6. I work with Jenny Fritz and yes that is her real name. I agree with her comments however, it has gone downhill since it stopped being a Bean Bar. Maybe they don't have anyone to answer to anymore and will do what they want.

And from my understanding they did not win the court case as it has been set down for trial, this info comes from another Bean Bar franchisee.

  10. Wow Ms Jenny Fritz - that your real name so what don't like the place go somewhere else. How sad for you that you would go out of your way to try and ruin someone business because you are friends or are you part of the problem that created the legal battle with this shop. If you really where just a customer I would think that you have more important things to do than to commit to write a disparaging comment regarding a coffee shop.

  11. Whoever said go to Viva on the corner for coffee instead of these guys was right. The coffee here is always bitter, too much restriction on their machine and the grind is too fine.

Viva is right on the corner and it's quiet and pleasant and the food and coffee are far better. For some reason the acoustics at this place are really loud. You can't hear yourself talk above all the noise.

If you work upstairs and never drink coffee anywhere else and you think these guys do good coffee you need to get out more. Go try a few other cafes because this one is lame.

  12. I buy coffee from Piazza 99, Cibo tried Viva and thought it revoltingly bitter, and many more coffee shops in Adelaide and suburbs. I have always found the staff a Piazza 99 to be decent, honest and above all friendly people trying to make a living by serving fresh food and coffee. I think their coffee is equal to or better than all of the above. I like Cibo but it is always too cold and the cups are a bit small. I am sure Jenny Fritz works for a Bean Bar as she is so unbalanced and sounds like she has an axe to bare. Get a life Jenny!
